Prior to David owing his own business, he worked as a systems administrator & bookkeeper for Fifteenth Spirit Pty Ltd. Fifteenth Spirit Pty Ltd owned a retail area franchise operating three Mobil petrol stations and two mechanical workshops. David was in charge of the company accounts and overseeing the day-to-day operations of the businesses.

Due to the significant lift in the store's sales and presentation, David was selected by Mobil Quix to operate a petrol station in Bulleen.
In 2003 David started Cain Energy Pty Ltd in order to operate this station, since then, Cain Energy has operated a total of eight stores, and in 2009 had a gross turnover in excess of $20M.
In October 2010 Mobil sold its retail arm to 7-Eleven Australia which included the sites operated by Cain Energy. David agreed to operate the stores for 7-Eleven on a short term agreement as he did not wish to take on a franchise.
